Transportation

Tremendous transportation resources are available to the firm locating its operations in Newport News. The transportation network, which links Newport News to the rest of the world market, is modern and sophisticated. A Newport News location not only allows your firm to reap the benefits of rapid and efficient transportation services, but it gives your firm a vital key to emerging as a business leader—flexibility. NEWPORT NEWS offers multi modal flexibility that’s central to the East Coast: by truck, by rail, by ship, by air.

HIGHWAYS/TRUCKING

Interstate 64 and its Downtown link, Interstate 664, are the vital freeways that supercharge the Newport News motor transportation system. The interstates bring everything closer together and cut down transit time for your products. Interstate access in Newport News benefits your local, metropolitan and national transportation movements.

Locally, you can ride the interstates from one end of the City to the other and anywhere in between. Newport News Marine Terminal and Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport are both served by interchanges. So are the City’s industrial parks and Jefferson Lab, the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility.

Regionally, the interstate network connects the downtowns of all four major Hampton Roads cities: Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Hampton. The I–64/664/264 system also provides quick access from Newport News to Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk and the Williamsburg area. Two bridge–tunnels — one along I-64 and the other along I–664 — link Newport News to the Southside of Hampton Roads.

Nationally, I–64 is an integral part of the best highway system in the world. In 50 minutes you can be in Richmond traveling on I–95 to Washington, D.C., the northeast urban corridor, the industrial markets of the mid West or South (via I–85) toward Atlanta, Charlotte and Birmingham. I–64 continues west to I–81, which then links with I–40, a major east west trucking route. I–64 proceeds further west through West Virginia and Kentucky toward St. Louis.

Three U. S. highways serve Newport News. Route 17 connects with Fredericksburg, Virginia at I–95 and leads south along the coast through the Carolinas. Routes U. S. 258/58 reach west along the Virginia/North Carolina border with interchanges at I–95, I–85 and I–81. U. S. 60 leads north to Richmond and then through central Virginia.

STREETS/ARTERIALS

I–664 offers four Downtown interchanges. Five I–64 interchanges serve the City’s Oyster Point and Denbigh areas to smoothly handle traffic in these high growth districts. Two major arterials (Warwick Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue) are four to six lane highways running the length of the City. About one half of Jefferson Avenue is six-laned.

Newport News has six, four lane cross street arterials (Mercury Boulevard, J. Clyde Morris Boulevard, Oyster Point Road, Bland Boulevard, Denbigh Boulevard and Fort Eustis Boulevard).

RAIL

Newport News is an eastern terminus of the CSX, the nation’s largest rail system. A main line terminating at the Newport News ports and several rail spurs carry goods and commodities between Newport News and CSX’s vast market. Rail spurs enter Oakland and Peninsula industrial parks. Siding is available to firms located along the CSX main line and spurs. Small loads can be picked up at your company’s freight dock by a CSX delivery truck.

CSX’s service area includes the industrial Mid West, the South, and parts of Canada. CSX has more than 47,500 miles of track. Besides containers and other general cargo, a tremendous amount of coal moves over the CSX tracks to the Newport News ports. The CSX is the nation’s largest coal hauling line.

Rail passenger service to Newport News is provided by AMTRAK. Daily service between Newport News, Washington, D.C., New York and Boston is provided from a new, modern passenger station opposite Huntington Park.
