Newport News, Virginia Applied Research Center
Applied Research Center

The Newport News Economic Development Authority has developed this seven story, 122,000 square foot office and laboratory building in order to provide an environment where the synergy of researchers working together from federal laboratories, universities and private industry can take place. Work at the Applied Research Center (ARC) revolves primarily around the research being conducted at Jefferson Lab, but NASA-Langley also has a strong research presence at ARC. Five universities share space at ARC: The College of William and Mary, Old Dominion University, Christopher Newport University, Norfolk State University and Hampton University. Companies taking advantage of the resources at ARC include Continental AG, BP Solarex, Northrop Grumman Newport News and—through the Laser Processing Consortium—IBM, Xerox, 3M and DuPont. Smaller companies developing state-of-the-art technology are located at ARC.

ARC is also houses several liaison offices that can link companies to technology resources available in Newport News and elsewhere. These include an office of the the National Science Foundation’s Industry/ University Cooperative Research Center for Lasers and Plasmas for Advanced Manufacturing.

To enquire about how your company can take advantage of the technology resources available through ARC, contact Dennis Manos, ARC Coordinator and Professor of Applied Science at the College of William and Mary at dmanos@as.wm.edu; Bernadette Kulas, Program Manager for the Center for Plasma and Photon Processing at bakula@jlab.org; or Mr. Gwyn Williams, Basic Research Program Manager at gwyn@mailaps.org. For information about office space availability at ARC, contact Florence G. Kingston at nneda@newportnewsva.com.
