LABOR TRAINING

The Newport News area labor force provides you with basic human capital that is well educated and motivated to succeed for you. A variety of labor training services are available to customize labor input to your specifications. Labor training services are provided through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program of the Virginia Department of Business Assistance, Peninsula Worklink, the New Horizons Technical Center and Thomas Nelson Community College. Of particular note is the Peninsula Workforce Development Center, which combines the resources of more than a dozen federally-funded workforce training programs, the Virginia Employment Commission, the New Horizons Regional Educational Center and Thomas Nelson Community College. Among other services, the Workforce Development Center offers online classes and re-certification courses for more than 60 occupations. The Peninsula Council for Workforce Development also coordinates business cluster group input to formulate training programs specifically designed to meet the needs of existing companies. Two additional training programs that enrich the Newport News area labor force are the Northrop Grumman Newport News (Newport News Shipbuilding) Apprentice School and the NASA/Langley Research Center's Engineering Technician Apprenticeship Program. Private business and technical schools offer tailored and flexible programs to meet the needs of the business community. Vocational training also takes place through the regions school systems with 17,000 non-military teens and adults enrolled in a vocational training program.
