People in Newport News have a strong work ethic. This means that companies have been able to experience high rates of productivity from a reliable work force. Northrop Grumman Newport News (Newport News Shipbuilding), for example, has regularly delivered complex Naval vessels on-time or ahead of schedule.

Other examples of the region's work force productivity abound. Continental AG's (formerly Siemens Automotive) Newport News facility was recognized in 1996 as one of "America's Ten Best Plants" by Industry Week Magazine. A year later, Federal Mogul was similarly recognized. Ford's number one North American truck assembly plant, located nearby, has recently been rated the number four auto plant in the world by J.D. Power and Associates.
