GOLFING IN NEWPORT NEWS+VIRGINIA PENINSULA

There are more than a dozen golf courses on the Virginia Peninsula, three of them in Newport News. Rated 3 1/2-stars by Golf Digest Magazine and "One of the 100 Best Places to Play, Middle Atlantic" by the Washington Golf Monthly, the Deer Run golf complex at Newport News Park includes two 18-hole courses (Cardinal and Deer Run), a driving range, two putting greens, the Deer Run Grille clubhouse restaurant, club rentals, and a pro shop. Golf instruction is available.

At the Cardinal golf course, the front nine's long and open fairways invite you to put your swing to the test, while the shorter but equally demanding back nine hones your targeting abilities. Songbirds nest among thick stands of pine that post guard along the length of this 6,757-yard course- hence its name. The Deer Run course's 7,209 yards will test the mettle of even the most experienced golfer. Curious white tailed deer and the abundance of wildlife merited this course a listing on the National Audubon Society Registry.

The exclusive James River Country Club golf course lets you have spectacular views of the James River and cool summer breezes off the River. The Country Club contains one of the world's finest collections of golf clubs and other golf memorabilia. The Villages of Kiln Creek contains a nine-hole course and the Champion course. Nearby courses in the Williamsburg area include Kings-Mill-on-the-James, Golden Horseshoe and Governor's Landing at Two Rivers.
