LIVE THEATER

From professional stage companies to college theater performances, Newport News residents can enjoy a wide variety of drama and musicals. The I.M. Pei-designed Christopher Newport University's Ferguson Center for the Arts, hosts a full season of world-class performances in its 1,700-seat concert hall, 500-seat music and theater hall, and 200-seat studio/children's theater. The Peninsula Community Theater, located in Hilton Village in Newport News, produces five plays in its season. The Virginia Shakespeare Festival, held annually at the College of William and Mary in July, presents twenty performances of two Shakespeare plays. Also on the Virginia Peninsula, the Williamsburg Players offer a three-play season, plus a summer performance. The Poquoson Island Players perform five plays in a year round season. Occasional performances with Mennonite themes can also be enjoyed at the Yoder Barn in Newport News.

In nearby Norfolk, The Virginia Stage Company, playing in the historic Wells Theater, presents performances of six plays in its fall to spring season. The Little Theater of Norfolk in the historic Ghent section produces five plays per year. The Generic Theater, also in Ghent, produces a half dozen plays annually. The Tidewater Dinner Theater offers lighter fare and musicals weekly.
