SPORTS IN HAMPTON ROADS

Sports fans living in Newport News have a wide choice of college, semi-pro and professional events to attend. Racing fans can enjoy the thrill of NASCAR racing every weekend (during racing season) at Langley Speedway. Racing fans of a different sort can enjoy thoroughbred horse racing and other events at the Colonial Downs race track in nearby New Kent County. For winter sports fans, the Norfolk Admirals, members of the American Hockey League, play at the Norfolk Scope arena.

Two Division III football teams play in Newport News—the Captains (Christopher Newport University) and the Newport News Builders (Newport News Shipbuilding Apprenticeship School). Additionally, William and Mary plays in the All Atlantic 10 Football Conference. Besides football, college basketball provides lots of excitement for local fans of both men’s and women’s basketball. Old Dominion University, playing in the Men’s NCAA Division I, regularly sees post-season play. The ODU Lady Monarchs, also in the NCAA, are usually ranked in the AP poll. The Lady Monarchs have won three NCAA women’s basketball championships. NCAA Division III men’s and women’s basketball can be attended at Christopher Newport University in Newport News. In neighboring communities, the College of William and Mary plays men’s and women’s basketball in the CAA and Hampton University plays women’s basketball in the MEAC and men’s basketball in both the MEAC and the NCAA.
