CONCERTS

Major concert venues exist for a variety of popular music styles—all within a short drive. Concert venues include amphitheater, arena and club/small concert. The I.M. Pei-designed Christopher Newport University's Ferguson Center for the Arts, hosts a full season of world-class performances in its 1,700-seat concert hall, 500-seat music and theater hall, and 200-seat studio/children's theater. Top acts, such as Bob Dylan, Garth Brooks, Santana and Ziggie Marley make Hampton Roads a regular stop on tours. Of course, "hometown" favorites, such as Bruce Hornsby and Dave Mathews, play to sell out crouds. The Verizon Wireless Amphitheater can handle crowds of 20,000 and the Hampton Coliseum easily seats 10,000. The new Ntelos Pavilion at Harbor Center in Portsmouth has amphitheater seating for 5,000. Jazz, folk, reggae and rock concert festivals are also held outdoors throughout the region. You can hear house bands perform in numerous local clubs. Various cafes and restaurants also host live entertainment throughout the region.
