NSF Center for Lasers and Plasmas for Advanced Manufacturing

National Science Foundation’s Industry/University Cooperative Research Center for Lasers and Plasmas for Advanced Manufacturing is located at the Newport News Economic Development Authority’s Applied Research Center next to Jefferson Lab. Managed by Old Dominion University, the Center allows technology-based companies to gain access to some of the most cutting edge photonics applications being developed today. The Center is currently conducting sponsored research in the following areas:

Advanced photolithography
Biomedical applications of lasers
Carbon nanotubes and nanocomposites
Electro-optic devices
Femtosecond laser applications
Flow sensors for sea water operations
Laser processing of materials
Laser micro-machining and welding
Laser welding
Optical sensors and laser processing
Plasma technology
Thin film coatings
Ultrahigh vacuum technology

For a reasonably priced investment, companies can become either full or associate members in the Center. Industry members currently include: AMAC International, BP Solar, Eastman Kodak, Honeywell, Continental AG and TAO Systems. The Center Director, Dr. Mool C.
